Luke Albiges during his World Record attempt | While at the Guinness World Record Guitar Hero Marathon I was introduced to Luke Albiges, the record holder for the first video game busker. On the night he helped kick off the event by attempting the highest score on Iron Maiden’s ‘The Number of the Beast’. Sadly he missed it by only a few points.
As the relay took off, I got a few minutes to have a chat with Luke about his Guitar Hero interests. In the interview he spoke of his love of the game and the rhythm action genre as a whole. Read on. |

It’s obvious you love Guitar Hero, but how did you first get into it? Harmonix's Amplitude and frequency, I really enjoyed those and I was looking forward to the first Guitar Hero for years. I then imported it from the states when it first came out.
I'm guessing you own all the Guitar Hero games then? Oh yes. Rhythm Action is my favourite genre.
Is there a particular Guitar Hero song or artist that you would call your favourite? There are loads I keep going back to. There's one or two in each of the games I play at least once a week. I do love Dragon Force, their songs are super tough but so much fun to play!
So in relation to Guitar Hero, I'm guessing you've heard of Guitar Freaks? I'm aware of it yes. One of my local arcades had a machine, sadly getting an imported copy at the time was difficult but when I have played it, it feels a whole lot easier. Especially after playing Guitar Hero with five buttons, going back to three was so easy.
You mentioned you have played Guitar Freaks, are there any other rhythm games that you enjoy playing? I play most of them to be honest. I went through a phase of just going crazy for DDR. Since I moved into a flat with an old woman below it died of death very quickly. I still play a bit, although I've lost the skills since Guitar Hero is all I’ve been playing lately.
Here's a strange question for you: If a gaming company gave you a huge wad of cash to make the music game of your dreams, what would you make? I'd go back in time and create Rock Band. I imported it and it's very, very good, I'm really enjoying it. I picked up the drums a lot quicker than I thought I would. I play a lot of Percussion Master and some Drummania so I think that helped.
It's nice to know that you like other rhythm games. There are a lot of Guitar Hero fans who are very blinkered to other Rhythm action games. I know! Guitar Hero is my game, I play guitar anyway and the sound track is always brilliant, so that's the one for me. But as I said, I play a range of rhythm games and I pretty much enjoy most of them; anything from weird quirky stuff like Elite Beat Agents to the more mainstream.
Many thanks to Luke for taking the time to talk to us and we wish you the best of luck for your next record attempt. |
