I've looked at a couple of guides on how to identify 3rdMIX versions where you look at the default song, but there's a simpler method (That doesn't require you to spend money): Reading the game's disclaimer during the attract sequence. I've presented screenshots of the title and disclaimer screens of the various 3rdMIX versions, as well as their default songs (For the people that really need to know) below:

[DDR 3rdMIX: Japanese]
Posted imagePosted image
As you can see, the disclaimer clearly reads "This game is for sale and use in Japan only.", thus is the Japanese version.
Default song: XANADU / THE OLIVIA PROJECT

[DDR 3rdMIX: Asian]
Posted imagePosted image
For this one, disclaimer reads "This game is for sale and use only in Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia.". Guess what, it's the Asian version.
Default song: UPSIDE DOWN / COO COO

[DDR 3rdMIX: Korean]
Posted imagePosted image
For this one, disclaimer reads "This game is for sale and use only in Korea.", but so does the one for version 2. For the Korean versions, look at the title screen: You'll see "VER.KOREA" in the lower right-hand corner. This is 3rdMIX Korean v1.
Default song: 바꿔 / 이정현 [BA KKWO / LEE JUNG HYUN]

[DDR 3rdMIX: Korean v2]
Posted imagePosted image
Again, for the Korean versions, you need to look at the title screen. This one is labelled, in the same spot as v1, "Ver.KOREA2" in the lower right-hand corner. This is 3rdMIX Korean v2.
Default song: SHOCK / GOOFY

Happy 3rdMIXing!

Yeah, I suppose this is a bit unnecessary, considering the most common machine you find is an EXTREME.

Didn't notice what? The disclaimers and the Korean Version tags?

WOW MEGA BUMP FOR JUSTICE.

3rd Mix was The One(tm) that they tried to get out worldwide (with DDR USA and Euromix being bad knock off 3rd Mixes, albeit running on System 573 analogue). The Korean versions wouldn't have been very successful outside of Korea (it's only fanboys that like it so much, and that's due to it's rarity).

Anyway. You can actually tell it from the title screen, no need to even read the licensing page.

* If the copyright date on the title scren is 2000, it's a Korean mix (not to mention the ver.Korea bits :-)).
* If it is 1999 and has no (R) on the Konami logo, then it's a Japanese version.
* If the copyright date is 1999 and it has an (R) on the Konami logo, then it's Asian.

There are dozens of 3rd mixes (mostly Asian) in the UK - just most are rusting away in warehouses and aren't on location in an arcade (and that's ignoring the ton of dodgy Extreme upgraded 3rd Mixes from 2004/2005)... gen1us, you aren't missing much by not havng played Asian - it's inferior to all other versions in terms of songlist.

I actually started out on a 3rd Mix Korean v2 here in the U.S. Oddly enough though, the arcade upgraded the machine to 5th Mix the very next day after I started playing! :-)
